How to Properly Keep Your Fresh Herbs

Herb_CroppedWe cut our herbs fresh for you before each market.  We grow a variety of them – Basil, Mint, Thyme, Sage, Rosemary, Cilantro, Dill, Oregano, Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, and more.

Many times at the grocery store the bunches of herbs are kept in the refrigerated section with a water mister on them.  This is very deceiving to you as a customer.  We do not recommend keeping your herbs in the refrigerator at all.

Here’s what you want to do when you get home from market with your fresh cut herbs:

The summer heat is a little rough on the delicate foliage of herbs, and they may not look as perky as you’d like once you get home.  Simply take some kitchen sheers and cut the stems fresh so they can absorb water quickly.  It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to take off the rubber band.

Put the herb bunch in a small vase of cool water and place in indirect sunlight – such as on your kitchen counter.  Refresh the bud vase with fresh water periodically.  If you glance over after a couple of days, and your herbs have drooped, trim the stems again and refresh the water.  If they don’t perk up, you might want to consider drying them and storing them in a plastic bag or container (refer to our Herb ID Chart and herb description page, as some herbs do not keep their flavor when dried).

Fresh herbs will make your kitchen smell delightful and bright.  They also make a nice and simple centerpiece for your kitchen table!
