If you do not plan to use your Heirloom Pumpkin or Winter Squash promptly, it is important that you prepare it for storage.
Wipe the surface with a light bleach solution and pat dry.
Store the pumpkin or squash in a cool dry location, preferably your basement or garage. Make sure the pumpkin or squash has good ventilation.
If you plan on displaying your heirloom pumpkin for decoration outside, and you want to cook with it later, monitor it regularly to make sure that there is no break down or decay. If you do notice decay, use promptly.
If the skin gets nicked, spread a small amount of Vaseline on the surface to help protect the wound from air and potential decay.
