Hello Loyal Farmers Market Customer,
We just want to touch base with everyone to let you know about some end-of-the-season specials since Farmers Markets will soon be coming to an end for the 2011 season.
If you are looking to stock-up on apples and would like to order a half bushel of apples or Bartlett pears, we will happily accept your order(s). (If you are wondering how much a half bush
el is…the wooden crates that we display in are half bushels.)
All of our apples will store well in your refrigerator, however, we have a number of apples that are exceptional in storage: Fuji, York, Braeburn, Stayman, Gold Rush, and Pink Lady (which we haven’t harvested yet, but hopefully we will have the Pink Lady in the next week or so).
Buying a half bushel of apples might be a little intimidating to some, but apples are great for salads, cooking, baking, or just eating out of hand. And since the apples will keep, the pressure is off to consume them quickly. Try any one of these recipes, or Google ‘apple recipes’ to find a new fall favorite for you and your family!!
Pear, Apple, and Cranberry Crisp (from FoodNetwork.com)
Prosciutto-Wrapped Pork Loin with Roasted Apples (from Epicurious.com)
Sausage, Dried Cranberries, and Apple Stuffing (Thanksgiving is around the corner!) (from FoodNetwork.com)
Jewish Apple Cake
Apple Sauce
Baked Apples (from Epicurious.com)
Or…Instead of handing out sweet treats to your trick-o-treaters, hand out a Kid Size Gala to every neighborhood ghoul and goblin!
We had a large harvest of onions, and still have plenty available, so we will also start bringing bags of our Red and Candy Onions to market. The bags are about 3 ½ pounds of onions and will be $5.00 per bag. We will also be bringing bags of shallots and they are 1 pound per bag and are also $5.00 per bag.
Or, if you would like to place an order for a half bushel box of Red and/or Candy Onions, please call the office (717-334-2722), send us an email (sidkuhnorch@gmail.com) or place the order with a Kuhn Orchards employee at market. The half bushel boxes of onions are $22.00 each.
There is still room to become a member of the Kuhn Orchards Winter CSA!! We had originally stated the registration deadline is the end of October, but we will accept applications through November 10th. There had been a number of folks who have expressed that they may not want a particular item in their CSA box, for instance, cider. If there is an item in the CSA box that is causing you reservations, please speak to a Kuhn Orchards Market Employee. We are open to substitutions.
We will be delivering boxes of fruit, cider, veggies, and more to CSA members. The pick-up locations are at the Red Caboose Parking Lot (131 Church St. NE, Vienna, VA 22180) and in the St. Augustine Catholic School and Church parking lot (next to 1914 V Street, Washington, D.C. 20009). CSA members can pick-up their box of produce every other Saturday morning between the hours of 9:00am and noon. The first day for the CSA for members picking-up in Vienna is Saturday, November 12th and in Washington, D.C. is Saturday, November 26th. There is more information on our website, as well as the application.
We look forward to seeing you at market!!
Sincerely,
David, Mary Margaret, and Sidney Kuhn
